Andy Sorensen (ajstudio)  > Events > 2005 Ship Creek King Slam'n Salm'n Derby
Every year in June, a King Salmon fishing derby is held in the heart of Anchorage, Alaska at Ship Creek. Some very big fish return to this stream, according to a state biologist, some as big as 70 lbs. The locals and tourists flock to the muddy banks for a chance at catching a prize winning fish. Since I personally fish this stream almost every day, I thought it would be fun to take my camera along, and post the photos for all to enjoy. This year, proceeds from the derby benefit the Downtown Soup Kitchen. There are 8 pages here that includes 116 photos that cover the time span from June 4th to June 12th, so don't miss any. Please let me know which one is your favorite, and don't be afraid to leave a comment. Enjoy!

Andy Sorensen (ajstudio) > Anglers await the opening bell on Wednesday morning. For much of the run, King fishing is closed from 11 pm each night till 6 am the next morning. Many anglers like to get there early each morning and stake out their favorite hole.
Andy Sorensen (ajstudio) > A trio of anglers work the 'hole' between the bridges. This hole can be difficult to fish due to the bridge supports. Once a fish is hooked, the fish can easily entangle the line in the bridge pilings, breaking the line or worse. Skill is important, but luck can play a significant role in landing a fish here.
Andy Sorensen (ajstudio) > Having a net close and ready is one of the best ways to keep a fish from running through the bridge supports.
Andy Sorensen (ajstudio) > Landing a fish on a steep, slippery mud bank can be tricky work.
Andy Sorensen (ajstudio) > Bob Tisserand works his magic and reels in another beautiful fish. That's two in as many days, isn't it? Great job and nice fish!
